The bantam Buckeye, is the only breed of chicken to date to be modeled after the work of a woman. Nettie Metcalf, the creator of the large fowl Buckeye wanted a breed that would lay a lot of eggs, but still had enough meat that hens could be put in the stew pot when their laying cycle had ended.
Nettie, also needed roosters strong enough to defend her hens from predators, and a hardy enough flock to face the harsh winters in her Ohio home-town. To create this breed, she mixed together the Dark Cornish, Buff Cochin, Black Breasted Red Game, and Barred Plymouth Rock, ultimately making the breed of her dreams. This process was replicated with the bantam versions of the aforementioned breeds to achieve a bantam version of the breed.
Because of this unique combination of breeds, the Buckeye has a tell-tale “Bar of Slate” in it’s plumage, showing the Barred Plymouth Rock in its genes. This breed was added to the SoP in 1960. Our breeding rooster placed “Best Cockerel” at the 2024 Ohio National Poultry Show in the Junior Division.
